History

Çukurova Holding and Kaplamin INC. entered the corrugated board box sector, and became the leading company in its field in Turkey by increasing its capacity in the following years. It entered corrugated cardboard paper production (such as flutting, test liner, imitation kraft) with Selkasan INC. towards the end of the 1980s. It was strenghtened in the sector with Ova Oluklu in Tarsus and Yalova Ambalaj in Yalova in order to get a larger share in the corrugated board box market in the mid-1990's. Çukurova Holding, which entered the paper production with Selkasan INC. in the early 1990s, established Atkasan INC. in 1996 because there was an inadequacy in scrap paper market. Çukurova paper and packaging group became partners with the leading paper and packaging group in Europe which is SCA Packaging International B.V. in the first half of the 90s in order to be more effective in the global market. Atkasan INC. has gradually increased its market share and has become a leading company in the sector by virtue of this partnership. SCA sold its shares in the global market to DS Smith Plc., the leading company in the sector in Europe, in 2012. In this context, the shares in Turkey also have been transferred to DS Smith. DS Smith withdrew from the Turkish market as of mid-2015 and all shares were transferred to Çukurova Holding. Atkasan INC. continues its activities within Çukurova Paper and Packaging Group as of the beginning of 2016.

Being a candidate country for European Union membership, Turkey has entered into a harmonization process in which the Union legislation (including environmental legislation) will be reflected in Turkish laws and fully implemented. New regulations regarding the environment and the criteria to be complied with have augmented and the concept of an integrated waste management company has developed in the sector especially in the 2000s, during the European Union harmonization process. Reducing the waste at its source, recycling and ultimate disposal have become issues of great importance that were accentuated. Depending on these developments, Atkasan INC. has adopted the idea that wastes other than paper should be collected and contributed to the economy and expanded its activities in this direction. An average of 180,000 tons of paper/paperboard waste is recycled annually by our group company Selkasan INC. The merchandise papers produced by Selkasan INC. are recycled into boxes by Kaplamin INC. which is our group company.

Owing to the Granule and Wood Pallet Recovery facilities investment completed in 2018, recovery processes of plastic waste and wooden pallets are carried out. Other wastes contribute to the economy by being sent to licensed recycling companies.

Developing new branches of activity for the recycling of packaging wastes as well as for an integrated waste management, Atkasan ensures that wastes that are of great importance are transported to appropriate recovery facilities by obtaining a hazardous waste transportation license.

Atkasan, which has started integrated waste management studies since 2005, received a Certificate of Competence for Environmental Consultancy from the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in accordance with the Environmental Legislation and accelerated its efforts in this direction.

Operating with its professional team, equipment and vehicle park in waste collection, Atkasan provides service to every region of Turkey through its İzmir and Manisa facilities.

It carries out the projects, within the scope of the Packaging Waste Control Regulation, for the source-separated collection of packaging waste at the source with many municipalities and authorized institutions as a licensed collection-decomposition company.
